Green Day is Coming!

By Xander Shapiro

Sustainable Sharon Coalition (SSC) is proud to announce that we are once again hosting Sharon Green Day. This event will take place on Sunday, May 7th from 12pm-4pm at the new Sharon High School.  This event is particularly special for us because it is part of SSC’s 10th Anniversary year. It’s a great opportunity for the community to come together and learn more about how to live a more sustainable lifestyle

Sharon Green Day is an invitation to the entire community to participate in a day of education, demonstration, exhibition, discussion, games, arts and fun, and service, with a focus on the most pressing environmental issues.  Sharon Green Day serves as SSC’s major annual fundraiser for operating costs and monthly programming.

On a personal level, it is important to me to provide residents with specific actions they can take to make a difference. Climate change is such a major challenge that individuals and families find it hard to determine what we can actually do.  As the expression goes “actions speak louder than words.”  At Sharon Green Day, we help provide ample opportunities for us all to find actions we can take in the days and months ahead.  Our vision is that Sharon Green Day will kick off a full year of increased education and training programs to extend Sharon Green Day’s impact here in Sharon.

A new component this year is the Sharon Recycling Department’s first annual Sharon Drop/Swap!  Don't do your spring clean-out yet, because the event - a celebration of sustainability through reuse - invites residents to "drop" used textiles and small home goods to the main entrance of Sharon High School on Saturday May 6th between 9am and 12pm for donation. These items will then be available for "swap" (residents can take them for free!) during Sharon Green Day from 12pm-4pm. Any items that are not claimed on the 7th will be donated to CMRK Inc., so donation items must meet their standards. See the Facebook event here.

Sharon Green Day is free and open to the public. Everyone is encouraged to come out and learn more about how to become greener at home and in their lives.

We still have a few open exhibitor slots for green businesses and community groups.  We are also soliciting sponsors to help SSC raise more funds for our year-round education and training activities.

This year’s event takes place the afternoon following the popular Emma’s Run event at Memorial Park Beach.  We encourage families to come to Sharon Green Day too.
