Message from Alicia Wu (founder of the event, high School student, climate activist, and runner)

Once upon a time, the concept of “climate change” was a distant affair that would be addressed by future generations. 50 years of stalling later, and our climate has deteriorated to irreversible depths. We are beginning to enter into an era where damages that we cause by carbon emissions, destruction of natural ecosystems, and overconsumption cannot be fixed by natural processes. We are beginning to face the permanency of climate change.

As a high schooler whose future lies in the path of climate destruction, I am terrified. What kind of Earth will I be living in 10 years, 30 years later? What will happen to communities currently affected by climate disasters such as flooding, droughts, and storms? What will happen to the human population and progress as a whole, say, 100 years down the line? Despite the scale and severity of the climate crisis, my worries are eased by the knowledge that organizations and people all across the globe are collaborating to combat the damages of this crisis, including organizations such as Sustainable Sharon Coalition.

With the help of SSC, I am organizing the 2023 Save Our Climate Fun Run at one of the most scenic natural preservation sites in Massachusetts, Borderland State Park. Through this event, community members from Sharon and our neighboring towns can support our climate work, while also getting the opportunity to have fun, practice a form of self-care, connect with nature, and spend time with the people they love. We hope that you are willing to support us in our vital work, and we are so excited for you to join us in this event and the wider movement of climate protection!
