January Program on Home Heating: History and Heat Pumps

Join Sustainable Sharon Coalition (SSC) and the Sharon Historical Society (SHS) for an evening that's all about keeping warm! Hear how local residents historically heated their homes, and then learn about the growing use of heat pumps, the technology of the 21st century.

NOTE: This program was recorded by Sharon Community TV. Watch it on SCTV’s website, under Programs / Community Events. Title: The History of Heating in Sharon & Heat Pumps.

The program will take place on Thursday, January 25, 2024, 7:00-9:00 pm, at Sharon Historical Society, 16 High Street. SHS members will talk about heating options through the years, from wood to coal to oil and gas. Experts from one of SSC’s heat pump partners will discuss the emergence of heat pumps as the go-to replacement technology for gas and oil furnaces. Sharon homeowners who have installed heat pumps will share their experiences and answer your questions, from the choice of contractors and equipment, to installation, to rebates and incentives, to heat pumps’ performance in winter and summer. We will also learn about and see the new heat pump that the Historical Society recently installed. After the presentation and panel discussion there will be refreshments and the opportunity to mingle with our panelists.

The program will be in-person only. Information about watching a recording will be announced after January 25th.

SSC has also posted helpful materials for residents. See the discussion about heat pumps within our section, Resources/Energy & Renewables.  The page on heat pumps offers basic information; advice on selecting, purchasing, installing, and paying for the equipment; and links to trusted and expert online resources for comprehensive information, videos, Q&As, and more.

Residents can also take advantage of SSC’s Neighbor-to-Neighbor program: homeowners who have purchased or have experience with various clean technologies, including heat pumps, are available to answer questions from other residents.

Then, to help residents with the process of installing heat pumps, SSC has partnered with local companies, based on recommendations from Sharon residents and SSC members. See those companies and their contact information here.

If you would like to help SSC reduce Sharon’s greenhouse gas emissions and promote renewable energy in our town buildings and our homes, please contact the SSC Special Energy Interest Group at seig@sustainablesharon.org.
