Read for the Planet

Read for the Planet (RftP): What, Why, When, Where, How, and Who?

What is RftP?

Read for the Planet is a four-month-long book group launched by Sustainable Sharon Coalition (SSC) with a number of sponsors (see list below). RftP January 2021 is based on the common reading The Future We Choose, Surviving the Climate Crisis by Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac, architects of the 2015 Paris Agreement. As the book points out, this is the decade to act and we are the generation. If we wait for our children, it will be too late. Accordingly, RftP will be a success if participants feel empowered to help fix this crisis now.

Why join?

Many of us express feelings of despair and mourning in the face of climate change. It seems too daunting to grapple with alone. This book and our discussions will awaken us to the possibilities of cultivating hope and positive change in a relaxed, fun, and productive way. It’s a short book spread over four months so there’s not a big time commitment. And even if you don’t get around to reading it in time, you can still join the discussions, which will ultimately focus on generating ideas to combat climate change.

When and Where is RftP?

We will meet virtually the first Wednesday of each month January – April, 7:00 – 7:45 PM, the first half of SSC meetings. Sign up here to get book group information and the Zoom link. And to help build more of a supportive community in between meetings, please participate in the quick and easy “Facebook challenges and prizes” which are already underway on Facebook.

How do I sign up and do I need to live in Sharon to participate?

Sign up here. Folks don’t need to be from Sharon to participate, so invite your out-of-town friends and relatives! If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to contact the RftP Planning Committee at support@sustainablesharon.org.
