Multiple Bids for New Trash Program are Essential for Best Deal

The Sustainable Sharon Coalition has a goal to reduce trash, increase recycling, and make the cost of trash removal equitable for all residents of Sharon.

Working with a number of professionals in various environmental fields and speaking to thousands of residents, we have delivered an alternative trash proposal for consideration by the Town Administrator and Selectmen.

We propose that each household receives a 35 gallon trash cart, supplemented by weekly recycling. Overflow options would always be available for households to purchase, according to their needs.

A 35-gallon trash cart qualifies as a SMART (Save Money and Reduce Trash) Program and therefore is eligible for MassDEP grant money. Plus, Sharon would have the distinct honor of joining 147 other Massachusetts SMART towns/cities.

We appreciate the process that town officials have embarked on so far. They welcomed feedback, talked to the current trash/recycling vendor, participated in public forums, have given ample consideration to the 35 gallon SMART cart, and tried to address greater recycling capacity.

However, with six months left before Sharon’s trash contract expires, we respectfully ask the Town to seek multiple competitive bids with options to ensure that residents are getting the most sustainable, equitable, and cost effective trash/recycling program.
