Sharon Power Choice is a town-wide electricity aggregation program that was launched in 2021. It offers residents both cleaner electricity and, presently, lower costs.

Here is some background.  A key strategy in fighting climate change is reducing the emission of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, that trap heat in the atmosphere.  The largest source of greenhouse gas emissions from human activities is from burning fossil fuels—such as oil and gas—for electricity, heat, and transportation. Governments at all levels have adopted goals to reduce these emissions by replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources, particularly wind and solar.

Many states are requiring local energy utilities to obtain a percentage of the electricity they provide from renewable energy sources. This is known as a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). In Massachusetts, that minimum percentage, set at 20% in 2022, is slated to increase to 35% by 2030. However, cities and towns also have the option to implement municipal electricity aggregation, a form of group purchasing in which a town: a) contracts for even higher amounts of renewable energy content in its electrical supply, and b) secures a discounted rate for residents, compared to the basic rates charged by utility companies.

Sharon’s aggregation program, Sharon Power Choice, offers residents who enroll 3 choices as to the amount of renewable electricity they will receive: for example, in 2024, 24% renewable, 44% renewable, or 100% renewable. Moreover, regardless of the level chosen, residents receive long-term, stable electricity supply prices and the potential for savings compared to the utility companies’ prices that typically change every 6 months.

The benefits of this program have been impressive. By June 2022, Sharon Power Choice had helped the town avoid 8.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide. Also, since program inception through the end of 2022, the program will have saved Sharon residences and businesses an estimated $2.1 million.

Visit the Sharon Power Choice website to learn more and to sign up. We hope you’ll choose the “Green” option for 100% renewable electricity sources.
