Lake Management Receives Funding

The Water/Lake Interest Group has good news to share! The Town’s Lake Management Study Committee (LMSC), whose three new members since last summer include Debbie Tatro, Ken Hyman and Laura Henze Russell, received a recommendation from the Community Preservation Commission for funding of $24,542. This will come up for a vote at Town Meeting, along with a Warrant Article to expand the membership and scope of LMSC. Please support both of these efforts! Town Meeting starts Monday, May 2nd.

Most of this grant is dedicated to an expanded lake water quality testing and monitoring program to inform an updated plan for the lake, and the balance for education, communications, and community/school projects.

LMSC will also be launching a Lake Massapoag website, and developing new posters for the beach kiosks. Stay tuned!

But we still need help! SSC’s Water/Lake Interest Group is looking for additional volunteers to help LMSC with:

• Expanded water quality testing (one site monthly, some during heavy rains)

• Design of educational posters and materials on ways to preserve the lake

• Potential “citizen science” effort on cyanobacteria (algae) ID and monitoring

• Ways to limit phosphorus runoff from septic, fertilizers, outdoor cleaning

Please email us if you're interested in joining us for these or other water/lake related initiatives!
