Removing Invasive Plants

INVASIVE PLANTS ARE TRYING TO TAKE OVER OUR LAKE

SSC volunteers have been busy cutting down Japanese Knotweed and other invasive plant species around Lake Massapoag. Memorial Park Beach, Beech Tree Park, and the Rec Center shoreline have received special attention due to the marked proliferation of Knotweed, Bittersweet, Buckthorn, and Poison Ivy in these areas. Groups and individuals from SSC, NepRWA, Friends of Conversation and Garden Club have volunteered to spend time removing invasive plants in targeted areas for cleanup. DPW makes weekly pickup of cuttings generated by our collective efforts. The pedestrian entrance to Memorial Park Beach near the Massapoag Rotary is a prime example of invasives gone wild. The dead tree in the below photo has succumbed to vine growth.

What can’t be seen are other shrubs and trees beneath the canopy of invasive plants that make the area along the dirt path look like a lush vibrant setting. In fact, the native shrubs and trees are gradually giving way to the invasives. The pedestrian entrance to Beech Tree Park from the Lake Massapoag boat launch parking lot is receiving special attention to remove all the invasive plants. Visibility into the Park has been enhanced and native trees have welcome opportunity to recover and thrive. Thanks to the many volunteers who have donated their time to make this cleanup happen.
