we're watching our waste

On December 19th, 2017, the Selectmen voted on a new municipal waste contract. Your calls and emails were successful because the 35-gallon trash cart is an option. In fact, households will be able to choose 35, 65, or (gulp) 96-gallon trash carts. Each of those will be priced at an increasing cost to be determined by the Town in the near future.

Plus, the Selectmen voted for weekly recycling!

And do you remember the petition that garnered 1,529 signatures? Most of you signed it and it stated, “We, the undersigned, residents of Sharon, MA, request that the Selectmen adopt a 35-gallon SMART (Save Money And Reduce Trash) cart trash program and weekly recycling.”

Accordingly, it’s quite a win for Sustainable Sharon Coalition.

So, does that mean that Sharon will be a SMART town? Well, it all depends.

If more than half the households choose the 35-gallon trash cart, MassDEP will designate Sharon SMART. Moreover, for every household that chooses a 35-gallon trash cart, $30 from MassDEP grant money will go towards offsetting the price of the cart.

SSC has much to be proud of as we nudge Sharon down from being in the top quarter of trash generators in Massachusetts towns/cities per household.

Thank you for helping Sharon to become more sustainable!
